Executive summary
The cooperation with Carbon Health began because the Impressit team has already worked with Alertive Healthcare, which was acquired by Carbon Health. As Impressit worked on DevOps improvements for Alertive and showed excellent results, Carbon Health also took the opportunity to work with our specialists. Thus, our experts have joined Carbon's TechOps team and started to transform and optimize the system for Carbon. The input of the Impressit team significantly improved the development process and maintenance of existing deployments.
Client background
Carbon Health sees its mission in ensuring decent health care for everyone and under any circumstances. Thanks to a combination of virtual applications and clinics that offer first-class medical expertise, Carbon Health is revolutionizing healthcare in the United States. In-person and virtual consultations, attention to both physical and mental health — Carbon Health works hard all so the future of healthcare begins today.
Challenges and objectives
The Impressit team was actively involved in introducing the DevOps standards and principles (such as Continuous integration and continuous delivery, Monitoring, Logging, IaC) as well as migration support and existing infrastructure support.
The main goal of the team was to improve tooling and standards for the other teams involved in software development for Carbon. Optimizing and organizing the infrastructure is another important aim the TechOps team had.
Extended and meticulous work was done on infrastructure cost optimization (DB consolidation, scheduled and reactive service scaling, resource allocation optimization), security improvements (enforcement of least privilege permissions, app and role-specific DB permissions, teleport for non-VPN access to private resources), CI/CD improvements (introduction of self-hosted Github runners on ECS, EC2, and EKS), K8S introduction (introduction of K8s cluster to replace ECS, FluxCD for GitOps approach, Kyverno for admission control, Karpenter for node management) and business continuity (creation of DR environment with continuous data replication).
Value delivered
At the moment, our Senior DevOps Engineer is focused on two main tasks: the improvement of the tooling and improving existing CI/CD by introducing new integrations and ways of doing the process. Our specialist took an important role in the migration process and the acceleration of migration. The process included migration of infrastructure from Aptible SaaS to own AWS infrastructure, database migration, and observability enhancement.
It’s also important to mention that significant progress has been made in the improvement of security on the project.
